Half an hour
one forty eighth of each day
should be consistently allocated to the following practice
should be consistently adhered to at the expense of all other things
the undertaking of regular exercise
no matter what your age
this is a good use of your time
such that the time that is left to you
may well be longer

Waiting for the 2.42
nothing much else to do
so we cuddle and kiss
oblivious
to the sensibilities of the other pair
sitting there

From Southbank
enter Melbourne on a bright yellow footbridge
under which the slow brown river flows
cross the river pass Flinders St station
walk your way to the parliamentary ridge
you will pass the most diverse of nations
every ethnicity, every colour and language
and generally we live harmoniously
although some would have it otherwise
I swear they would have us live in catastrophe
but I refuse to cooperate with their lies

The tram it is late the line it is clear
except for the gig riders in their weatherproof gear
the pedestrians dodge each other prop and weave
the boy on the kerb wipes his nose on his sleeve
the pigeons peck at spilt food on the street
lovers embrace and kiss when they meet
a young couple argue about where they should go
an old couple look sadly at the carnival show
that washes before them like the waves at high tide
where the truth is the water but the water lied
and the city is a victim in the coils of a snake
the people are uncertain is this dream or awake
the man on the seat nearby smells of alcohol and sweat
his hair is matted his shoes are wet
and seagulls circle looking for something to steal
from trailing children with chip bags they conceal
there’s a dashing young man dressed up to kill
and a dazzling young woman sexualised to the hilt
a girl sitting on the path is blackened to the core
blackened teeth blackened eyes blackened soul blackened jaw
the sky it is ruby splattered with pearls
of sun setting starlets in blonde locks and curls
it’s a festival of side shows coloured and brash
where faux credit has all but replaced cash
where art is artificial made by machines
where the grifters come to realise their schemes
a homeless woman drags herself past unstable and slow
and I’m ready so ready to go go go

Did you see the seagull
standing on the lamp post
looking at the scenery
taking in the view
ooh ooh

white crane meets blue glass
red coils and tram lines
stop look can't pass
compose image and refine
photo taken general view
enjoy the process
and the shot too

I love the part
played by public art
for the stories it tells
for the stories that well
for what it says about us
in artists we trust

Words and photo are my own and subject to copyright. I do not use AI. I do not want AI to use my work.
Hold those words as one beloved
hold them close to your chest and let time slip
step outside time as one embraced
in the arms of poems that hold you in their grip
be taken to that strange dimension
where all is compressed and distilled
into new forms of truth turned this way and that
by the bent of the poet’s will
reminded of who we truly are
by words that by being will never lie
weep laugh and gasp in that suspension of time
being far from everywhere yet ever closer by

Melbourne’s Yarra River and embankment can be busy places. I have published some of these photos before, but thought this group made a nice new set.
It's the river that binds
Melbourne's spreading towers
to the city
and when the weather is good
it looks oh so pretty!

A dreamy filter diffuses the sun
path, walking and sun all become one
the foliage the light the green and the gold
wombolano morning a sight to behold

Man
built over grassland
built into sky
built atop mountains
to nature defy
built into forest
built under water
built in the desert
built bricks and mortar
built with cut wood
built with the earth
never understood
non stop building is death
every built patch a carnage
every built patch an ending
every built patch a destruction of what nature would have seen
every built patch an obliteration of what nature could have been

Melbourne has a rich architectural heritage. Sadly, much was lost to development in the 1970s. However, an innovative present is some consolation. I love to walk around the city taking photographs of the preserved buildings/facades of yesterday and the creative designs of today. I hope you, my reader, enjoy the view too.

This large suburban park is full of nice surprises. There is an interesting local history trail, there are pleasant walking paths and the playground and other amenities provide for all the family.

Flinders Street
is the place to meet
the trains will get you there
you'll go out on the town
never let down
in this city where
the lights stay bright
all through the night
it's an entertainment fair
a place for dreams
and long limousines
amongst the glare and flair
the restaurants fill
and the public will
take in a bar or show
the music scene
has to be seen
then to another venue you go
so it's out to dance
or find romance
dressed and ready to party
new friends and old
a bit tipsy bold
will party away with glee
the night savoured
the energy wavers
for some their time is up
or more fun beckons
for those who reckon
there's more drink in this cup
the train ride home
goes on and on
if going home alone
while those lucky new pairs
hit the fresh air
tantalised by the unknown
