You describe so well how it is being a youth in a city… I had that time dreaming of such a life, but I always ended up worrying about missing the last train/bus for home.
Wow, I get a sense of the temporal, the momentary, the party life. I especially like this:
“a place for dreams
and long limousines
amongst the glare and flair”
Thanks for connecting me to such great lyrics. I agree terribly sad and bitter though. If it was a real life sentiment I hope life got better for Billy.
Hi!
Another city that never sleeps. My niece lives close to Melbourne. I used to think I’d get down under (parents did) but now the journey seems too arduous so it’s nice to see it through your words.
nice post

Oh Melbourne is certainly the party town. I remember it well, the best city. 🙂

I love that you wrote from a very alluring perspective, to see a metropolis and all the entertainment and lights it has to offer.

Thank you, Sean, for taking me back to Melbourne. I visited almost eight years back but I remember it vividly. What a lovely tribute to your city.

Your poem reminded me of some of my favorite lyrics ever, not especially happy ones, but sooooo profound and true: Lush Life by Billy Strayhorn. https://genius.com/Billy-strayhorn-lush-life-lyrics

I love this! That was exactly it going into the centre of Melbourne in my teens and early twenties. 🙂
